What is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

 

 

 

This disorder is a condition that is characterized by hyperactivity,  impulsivity, inattentiveness and restlessness. If not adequately treated , it can impair academic and occupational achievements. This subsequently leads to performance anxiety spells,social and psychological problems.

 

 

Those who suffer from poor Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder  often  display the following  :Their  attention span is short and gets easily distracted by extraneous sounds. They have significant delay or fail to complete assigned tasks either at  at work or school. They usually find reading to be quite boring and read over materials several times when the content  is not an area of interest to them.  They procrastinate assigned  tasks till last minute,then  rushes through it making lots of mistakes. They have poor organization skills with a lot of clutter around them .They often misplace things around  the house.

 

This condition  is prevalent in children and  sometimes in adult population. It is classified into three  categories listed below.

The 3 different types:

            •           Hyperactive –impulsive

            •           Inattention

            •           Combined

 

 

Symptoms that persist in ADHD:

 

Inattention

            •           Poor attention

            •           Unable to perform a task that requires concentration

            •           Poor attention span

            •           Unable to adhere to social norms

            •           Procrastination

            •           Disorganization

 Hyperactivity

            •           Excessive talking

            •           Intense desire to walk or run around

            •           Cannot engage in quiet activities

To be diagnosed with hyperactivity disorder, the person will have minimum six symptoms of impulsiveness and hyperactivity or minimum six symptoms of inattentiveness. Due to the symptoms, the person may have difficulty to function  at school,work, home or social settings

There are many other mental problems arising in adults including Attention Deficit & Hyperactivity, Bipolar Disorders, Depression Disorders to name a few.   

 

 This disorder requires Medication Management by an experienced psychiatrist  who understands the condition of the child or adult.
